THE STORY:

12/31/12: Update

I must admit I was getting behind on this, but managed to catch up in the last week. I have 3.1 miles left (5K) which I will do on the New Year 5K run in Prospect Park tonight. This will round up to exactly what I promised - 262 miles.

Now Jinger on the other hand followed the underpromise and overdeliver principle... and instead of the 400 she was aming for she is over 520 miles, and well in position to double up on me with her jog from today (which I assume is happening).

Julianne ran about 40 miles, 26 of which are accounted for ;)

Here is a link to the accountability spreadsheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AondQvaoqSFkdEVPeGtXd0l6cWxEZlJCa21JQXpaaWc#gid=8

In the process we have raised over $1500 and a few promised large donations are still pending! If you help us get to $2620, that'd be an excellent end of the year. The damage for Sandy is far from gone and there are still people to feed, homes to repair, and parks to clean up.

Thank you and Happy New Year!

11/15/2012: Update

We are off to a good start.
Let's keep it going!

There are a few updates I wanted to share.

  • We now have accountability. Check this out!
  • It is not too late to join us in the bigger effort and invite your friends to support you. You have nothing to lose, just run!
  • It is not too late to support us, you don't have to run, just chill!

The big news is that this will be a crazy weekend. We are running the NYRR Knickerbocker 60K (map) at 8am-3pm in Central Park on Saturday and The Brooklyn Marathon (map) at 8:30am-1:30pm on Sunday for a total of over 102K (65 miles and change). Both races will be loops (in Central Park and Prospect Park respectively). Come and join us! Even for one 4 mile loop. If you have to do a long run anyway, this is a great way to do it with some friends! I will donate $0.10 per friend per mile! Julie will be doing the last loops of each race with us! We will be going slow... 11-12 min/mile.

IMPORTANT: We will have Italian Nutella, bananas and Baklava for the people who join us for a few loops and are not part of the main race (ok, ok, for the friends doing the full main race also)!

If you are excited to join us, please send me a note at kamen@yotov.org . I will have my phone on raceday (347) 331-3807 so you can call and check where in the loop we are if you are joining in the middle of it! I hope to see you in the parks this weekend!

11/4/2012: Update

Today was beyond words. Thousands of people gathered in Central Park and elsewhere and showed that you don't need special arrangements to do something truly special - to run a marathon and help others. An excellent coverage of the event is in NY Times.

Our fundraising effort it is off to a good start and so is the recovery from Sandy. Many friends not only ran, but physically helped with recovery efforts in the worst hit areas... if you are able to do this, please head over to http://www.nycmore2012.org and do what you can!

For most of us life goes on as usual when we return to work tomorrow. For many this is not the case. We want to raise money and awareness to help the ongoing relief efforts. These will go on for a while and there is a part  everyone can take to help.

In the summer months when I have less family responsibiliy, I would have run around the devastated ares with a 60lb backpack (something extreme I am quite good at) and deliver help first hand. But one doesn't plan hurricanes on schedule. If your situation does not allow volunteering your time (logistically or otherwise) there is still a lot you can do!

Today we ran a marathon. 26.2 miles. Many of us run, but instead of counting miles we want to make each mile count. Fixing up after Sandy and getting NYC up and running again will take a while. I am pledging to run 262 miles till the end of this year and I will donate $1 on this fundraiser for each and every one of them. Many employers, including mine, often match charitable contributions, which can help multiply the money raised.

Here is where you step in...

  1. I am asking you to commit to donate a fixed amount for each mile I run till 12/31/2012. No amount is too small. It all makes a difference. If all my friends supported me with $0.01 per mile, we would raise over $1000.

  2. I am asking you to join me on the run. Set a milage goal to run till the end of the year and commit to donate something for each mile. Try and get others to commit to support you!

Please send me your commitment and I will add you to this compaign. I will support back anybody who commits to support me!

Here is the current situation:

  • Runner: Kamen
    - $1/mile donated by Kamen*
    - $X/mile donated by You
  • Runner: Julianne
    - $5/mile donated by Kamen*
  • Runner: You
    - $X/mile donated by Kamen*

also pending approval for match by employer

I am capping my personal contribution to a maximum of $500 (before employer match) and everybody is of course welcome to do as appropriate for them.

Please send me your committment at kamen@yotov.org (for running and support) and I will update the list! Finally individual, one-time contributions are always accepted and appreciated! Help me help in getting NYC up and running!

11/3/2012: Let's get NYC up and running again!

After a week of devastation, uncertainty, arguments, and division, a few friends of mine and I decided we wanted to do something to help get NYC, our home, up and running again.

NYC was delivered a massive blow this past week, as Hurricane Sandy ravaged our boroughs, in what is estimated to be the worst storm in our city’s history.

Through the devastation, one thing remains constant. What makes New Yorkers unique is our spirit. We come from everywhere - a real melting pot of trials and triumps, successes and setbacks. Our common thread is our sense of resiliency, our ability to bounce back, better than ever.

Many runners were slated to run Sunday, November 4, in the world’s largest road race. Never is the city’s spirit more alive and apparent than the New York City Marathon. It is a day of hope and happiness, a day when people feel like the sky’s the limit. Unfortunately, the very event which is universally recognized as a driver of hope and happiness, created argument and separation, and was ultimately cancelled by the officials.

In an effort to reunite our city, we want to bring NYC up and running again! We will start the day bright and early with running the original NYC Marathon course in Central Park, self supported, as a statement to our belief that running is not a problem, but a solution. Team members will then spend the rest of the day helping the relief efforts in a way most meaningful to them. Some by helping directly in devastated places like the Rockaways, some by continuing the fundraising effort.

We pledge your support of our belief and our city! Come up with the maximum contribution you can give 26.2 times and show your support. All proceeds will be allocated to the hurricane relief efforts, via the American Red Cross.
