Thank you for visiting my fundraising page! I'm thrilled to be training again for the New York City ING Marathon. In 2011, I ran the NYC Marathon and raised nearly $9,000 for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust (MWCT). I finished the marathon and was honored to be a part of something so special. I got involved with the MWCT through my company, which does pro bono work for the MWCT. In 2012, my company sent me to Kenya to work with the Maasai people and the MWCT on many ecological issues, including water shortages and disease. I was awestruck on how effective the money I raised had directly impacted the lives of the MWCT. Moreover, I was excited to raise more money and awareness to help the MWCT after talking with the Maasai people and the leaders of the MWCT.
With that said, I am running the 2013 NYC Marathon to raise money for the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust (MWCT). My goal is to raise $6,000 to help support the MWCT. ABOUT ME: I am an Ecologist at AECOM, focusing my efforts on Aquatic Ecology. Specifically, I work on wetlands, rivers, lakes, streams, estuaries, and the marine environment. I primarly conduct habitat assessments, but also do a myriad of things. I'm a regular runner, backpacker, hiker, and have played soccer my whole life. I love dogs and helping others. And while I consider myself athletic, I never thought I would run a marathon, but in 2011 I did. In my humble opinion, I think it was a success. It was a lot of work to train and raise money, but it was all worth it when I met the Maasai people and exchanged greetings with the MWCT staff who work very hard to help preserve the habitat and ecosystem of Eastern Kenya.
The overall mission of the MWCT is to support the preservation of biodiversity within the Maasai tribal lands of East Africa by promoting conservation, education, youth development, and health services within the Maasai community. The MWCT is unique because they couple the promotion of sustainable and productive human land use with the simultaneous preservation of precious and necessary animal and plant habitats making the MWCT’s work sustainable and valuable.
My company, AECOM, has been a key partner with MWCT for several years in a variety of pro-bono initiatives including strategic planning, baseline inventory mapping, watershed mapping, market assessment and fundraising support. AECOM continues to team up with the MWCT to raise funds and gain worldwide support for the MWCT and I’m excited to be a part of all of it again. This year will be even more amazing because AECOM is sponsoring the first ever Maasai Olympic Champion to fly over to NYC and run the NYC Marathon with us, as part of the MWCT Team.
My goal is to raise $5,000, all proceeds go directly to help the MWCT. Anything you can donate, whether it’s $5 or $500, will be put towards achieving this goal. Every donation counts. If you donate more than $100, please contact me directly, and I will send you a special t-shirt.
Specifically, here are some ways your donation will positively impact the Maasai Wilderness Conservation Trust:
· If you donate $26, you will pay for the boarding of a game scout for 1 month, ensuring protection of lions and rhinos against poachers.
· If you donate $26, you will pay the salary of a teacher for 3 days at MWCT.
· If you donate $130, you will pay the salary of one Simba scout for 1 month to help protect lions from being killed by poachers.
· If you donate $260, you will pay the salary of a game scout for 1 month.
· If you donate $520, you will buy a radio for a game scout to track wildlife poachers.
