On September 29, Seeds, Parents, Counselors, and friends will walk from City Hall across the Brooklyn Bridge to raise awareness and support for Seeds of Peace.
This past summer I had the privilege of working at Seeds of Peace International Camp. I have worked there before and I once was a camper, but this summer was special in its own right. I have never seen a more impressive staff and more inspirational campers.
Just as an example... on July 4th we went to the Portland Sea Dogs game. After the game and the fireworks, 60 tired campers from 8 countries piled back into our coach bus with Sea Dogs gear and full stomachs. About 10 minutes into our drive, the bus broke down. As we all stood outside in a random parking lot in Maine, we were told that it would be an hour and a half until a new bus would come.
Rather than complain, the campers decided that this was an incredible opportunity to make connections with one another. Within minutes they all found a partner who they did not know well and sat down on the blacktop of this dark parking lot and talked. They asked about their families, their homes, their hopes, their fears.
These kinds of conversations are so inspiring to me not because they are solving conflicts or ending in large treaties getting signed. They are inspiring because everyone who comes to Seeds (and the thousands more who apply) just want a chance to make a connection with "the other side." Seeds provides that opportunity and so much more.
As a Seed Graduate, I know that my life has been changed because of Seeds. It made me a better person and a better citizen of the world. That is why I am walking.
