On March 17, 2013 I will be running the NYC Half Marathon and will be running in part to support Shoe for Africa. This is an amazing organization that started in 1995 by organizing races in Eldoret, Kenya to promote peace and provide basic health education, especially regarding HIV prevention. Shoes were also distributed in order for people to run. Over the years the organization has been able to build a school, and has gotten support from several Kenyan elite runners.
Please join me in supporting Shoe 4 Africa's current project---building the only public children's hospital in Kenya. This is a "bricks and mortar" campaign. The hospital will serve a catchment area of 22 million, to include surrounding countries, and has the support of local nurses, doctors associated with a teaching facility as well as the Ministry of Health.
In Africa, approximately 1 in 7 children die before their 5th birthday due to a preventable or treatable illness. The hospital can provide basic life saving services.
I hope that many of you will consider a small donation, even $5.00.
