EVENT DATE: Mar 19, 2017
First and foremost, thank you for visiting my page. I am running the 2017 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon as a member of the Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York (EFMNY) Team.
I am asking that you assist me in reaching my goal to raise money for this great organization. The Epilepsy Foundation is a cause that hits home for me. Currently, I am a police officer with Harvard University Police Department in Cambridge, MA. Previously, I was a police officer for the Town of Lincoln, MA for 15 years. I am married to the most amazing and supportive woman (Teresa) and father of three incredible children, Gabriella (10 years old), Anna (6 years old) and Saige (2 years old). In 2008, when I was 30 years old, I began to experience "episodes" where I would feel like I was having an out of body experience and would space out for a few seconds. These episodes were infrequent at first, but over time they became a regularly occurring thing.
In the beginning, I chalked these episodes up to being over tired, but when they started happening multiple times a day I finally went to see my primary care physician who referred me to a Neurologist at the Lahey Clinic in Burlington, MA. After undergoing numerous EEG's, MRI's, and a slew of other tests they diagnosed me with complex partial seizures. This was a very scary time for me as a father and as a police officer as I did not know what was going to happen.
Through the testing, the doctors found a small tumor on my Pituitary gland. The doctors do not believe that this was causing my seizures, but scary nonetheless. I never had a seizure in my life prior to my 30th year on this earth.
With the help of medication, my seizures are controlled. I have an annual EEG and all have come back unmarked. The cause for my seizures still remains a mystery. I have now been seizure free for 7 years.
Having this scare in my life has caused me to be very grateful for my health and all the things I love. I want to take this opportunity to raise money for a cause that helps those that suffer from Epilepsy and raise money and awareness to help with their battles and day to day life.
The Epilepsy Foundation of Metropolitan New York is an official charity partner of the 2017 United Airlines NYC Half Marathon!
When you support Team EFMNY, you are helping us raise epilepsy awareness and further our Into The Light programs, which are free of charge, open to all and serve to empower individuals and families affected by epilepsy and seizure disorder. These programs let others know they are not alone, and assist those navigating through life with epilepsy by providing information on access to treatments, resources and a supportive community.
The NYC Half provides you with an opportunity to transform lives in a direct and meaningful way. By supporting the runners of Team EFMNY, you can truly make every mile count.
