They say that less than 0.5% of the world's population has run a marathon. There are many reasons why people run 26.2 miles - some do it for fun, some do it for a personal challenge, and some do it for a special cause. This year I am running in my fourth marathon, the second time in NYC. Why am I running again, you may ask? Two reasons of which both have to do with a common connection to Boston Children's Hospital.
First, my sister Colleen and her husband Ike, gave birth to two precious twin boys, Chase and Colton. Both were born 7 weeks early; however, Chase was only 3lbs, 12 oz and was having issues gaining weight. After his initial check-up, he was diagnosed with a heart murmur and it was eventually discovered that he had two large holes between the upper and lower chambers. Only a week old and already facing huge challenges, the amazing doctors and staff at Boston Children's quickly worked to begin helping Chase. After two successful surgeries and tons of love and care, Chase is growing stronger and stronger every day! This is very near and dear to me as not only is Chase able to lead a normal life with his family and twin brother Colton, he will be able to grow up with his niece (my daughter), sharing many memorable moments together.
The second reason why I’m running is for our dear friend Laura P. who was treated at the exact same hospital, Boston Children’s, 36 years ago. At that time the survival rate was 1 in 1,000. She, too, had challenges ahead of her, but she persevered and is leading a very healthy, happy life! This is proof of the phenomenal, timeless work the doctors and staff of Boston Children's Hospital perform. They truly are top notch, the best of the best, and take great pride in caring for their patients and the families.
So, this year I run for my nephew, my friend, and all those who have had to face unforeseen health issues at such a young age. I ask that you please place your gift today as your donation is so important to help these true heroes continue to do their great work for our youth. Your support will help others like Chase and Children's Hospital!
