As many of you know, I have been bitten by the running bug! In November 2010 I ran my first marathon, the Richmond SunTrust Marathon, in a time of 3 hours and 22 minutes. This race time has given me the opportunity to get an automatic bid to participate in the New York City Marathon, a race in every runner dreams of competing. This time however, my goal is not only to successfully complete the marathon, but also to raise money for a non-profit organization about which I feel extraordinarily passionate, Guiding Eyes for the Blind-New York City Region.
Guiding Eyes for the Blind is a leading, nonprofit 501(c)(3) guide dog training school, serving blind and visually impaired people from around the world. Since its inception, the school has provided—free of charge—thousands of blind people with specially bred and trained dogs that grant them dignity, freedom and greater independence. I have been a member of Guiding Eyes for the Blind since 2009 with the role as a volunteer puppy raiser. Puppy Raisers provide a home, teach good social skills and house manners, attend training classes, and coordinate care with Guiding Eyes veterinary staff, working to create a successful Guide Dog. I was lucky enough to raise two dogs, Ritz and Patina, and experience the dedication, love, and passion that go into raising these puppies. These two puppies taught me so much and have really changed my life.
Guiding Eyes for the Blind is broken up into different regions, serving almost the whole east coast. I have been part of the New York City Region, which I consider my second family. The devotion I see in the puppy raisers, puppy sitters, and our teachers is remarkable, which is why I have decided to specifically donate my funds to this specific part of Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Our region goes above and beyond the weekly classes by having luncheons with the dogs to work on restaurant behavior, birthday parties for the dogs to socialize and have fun, holiday gatherings for practicing new skills, and so much more.
By racing for a charity, training is becoming that much easier and more enjoyable. I hope you agree with me on the importance of Guiding Eyes for the Blind and specifically the enthusiasm I feel toward the New York City Region. This program has affected my life so deeply that this fundraiser is my way of giving back to Guiding Eyes for the Blind. Your contribution will enable Guiding Eyes for the Blind to enrich the lives of the blind and visually impaired, by providing them with magnificent, professionally trained dogs. Thank you so much for your amazing support for the race and for Guiding Eyes for the Blind!
