New York's Most Important Phone Bill
Everybody needs someone to talk to at some point in their life. Someone who will listen and take them seriously, no matter what they’re dealing with. That’s where Samaritans comes in.
The Samaritans is the city's only community-based organization devoted to preventing suicide, operating NYC's only completely confidential suicide prevention hotline 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
Suicide is the 4th leading cause of death for 15-34 year olds in our city. It is the 6th for those 35-44. Most people are shocked to learn that 30,000 New York City high school students alone attempt suicide each year.
In addition to the devastation to the individual, the family, friends and community they live in, a suicide attempt has great economic costs.
The average cost of a hospitalized suicide attempt in New York State is $11,509.00.
The average cost for Samaritans to answer a phone call from someone in crisis is $6.00.
Samaritans is asking you to help us respond to New Yorkers in their moment of need. $18,000 is what it costs to be able to answer the phone. Please help Samaritans pay New York’s Most Important Phone Bill.
