A cataract is a clouding of the lens in the eye that affects vision, 51% of the world’s blindness is caused by cataract. Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world, yet also very preventable. Of the 53.8 million people suffering from cataract, 52.2 million live in low to middle income countries. In many cases, cataracts goes untreated in low income countries. This is due to a variety of reasons including inadequate surgical services, lack of information, transportation problems and financial reasons.
Dr. Sanduk Ruit and Dr. Geoff Tabin, started the Himalayan Cataract Project to fulfill their personal goals of eradicating as much unnecessary blindness in their lifetimes as possible. The Himalayan Cataract Project serves reaches to the most unreachable patients where its service is needed through a combination of; teaching ophthalmic care at all levels, transferring skills, establishing eye care centers and performing cataract operations in 6 to 7 minutes, at a low cost, with excellent outcomes.
