BENEFITING: THE MAYORS FUND TO ADVANCE NEW YORK CITY
11/5: Work today in NYC had a morose tone. Coney Island, the Rockaways, and Staten Island are all in dire need as are the coastal areas of NJ. While some have heat, many don't have homes. The NE simply does not know what to do with flooding and storms.
If you're free on Saturday or Sunday, a group hosted by a friend of mine Jessica Sherr is taking a bus over to the Rockaways. http://www.facebook.com/jessica.sherr.5?ref=ts&fref=ts
New York Cares is starting their annual coat drive early. My place of work is a drop off point. Feel free to contact me if you need info.
11/4: I was at Central Park today sorting and showing support for the stranded out-of-towners who ran anyway, without using any resources from the city, and mostly because they were dedicated to a specific cause that brought them so far from home. Many finished, downed painkillers and headed over to volunteer, though they have really never been to the city before. Huge thx to all that donate or click on the links to lend a helping hand.
http://interoccupy.net/occupysandy/ This is extremely grass roots. I met the folks doing the collection at their apartment and they have basically rented a UHaul and are trucking back and forth to RedHook.__________________________________
11/3: Hi All... I am in process of re-routing my marathon efforts to another marathon this coming weekend. Having neared my goal in my other fund raise for the NYAWC (I'll cover the rest of out of pocket), it would be my greatest wish that you guys donate to the Mayor's Fund to Advance New York City.
Having grown up in Florida, I worry a lot about profiteering post-disasters. In classic May form (I called, emailed around, asked around, and this appears to be one of the best ways to try to donate money and effort. Just earmark donations for "Hurricane Sandy Relief". If you have a specific borough you need it to go to, go ahead and indicate that. Their office is being inundated, but I will try to post more information on how the funds are being disbursed.
If you prefer to write check, just let me know and I'll forward you the details to directly contact their office.
For those of you antsy to help in Manhattan, I've got 12 miles to stay in shape for next week but will also be checking out these two things:
