Event Name: Flint Water Crisis

THE STORY:

In April of 2014, the city of Flint switched its water source from Detroit to the Flint River in order to save money. Complaints emerged immediately as Flint's residents described their water as brown and muggy. However, Michigan Governor Rick Snyder and Flint's local government insisted the water was safe to drink despite residents demanding action. Even General Motors stopped using Flint's water source because it was corroding their car parts.

It wasn't until October of 2015, over a year later, that it was confirmed to the residents of Flint that their water had been contaminated with lead. The lead far exceeded safe toxicity levels resulting in 10 deaths and hundreds of kids met with the long lasting effects of lead intake. The lead has ruined the city's pipes, and it took a significant amount of time for the government to take any necessary steps toward helping Flint's citizens.

The Black Student Union, along with the Women of Excellence Strength, & Tenacity (WEST) and Gentlemen of Quality (GQ), at New York University are fundraising to support the residents of Flint by providing cases of water which can be used for a multitude of purposes, not limited to drinking, bathing, and cooking. ALL proceeds will be used for the stated purposes.
