Your gift will help to raise funds for high school students to participate in a summer leadership institute in Kansas City in the 2019 summer.
AnytownKC is not your typical summer camp. The program's purpose is to inspire a young generation of leaders who will create more just and inclusive communities. Anytown was once a national program occurring in cities across the country, however it is now only offered in a few cities. After a 4-year gap of no Anytown, or similar program, offered in KC, a Steering Committee of individuals organized and fundraised to host a camp in 2017 for 23 students attending 16 different schools in the bi-state area.
During the week long institute, youth reside on a college campus and learn through each other's experiences of oppression and prejudice with large group simulations and activities and through small groups discussions. Students learn about leadership concepts for becoming change agents and allies of social justice.
Anytowners build relationships with young people different than themselves which in turns build community. After participating in Anytown, young people return home to their families and schools ready to lead in new and empowered ways and work together to confront oppression and prejudice in all its forms. To learn first hand what its like to experience Anytown, take a minute to read one alumni's story.
In partnership with the National Conference for Community & Justice of St. Louis, we hope to host a 2019 #AnytownKC. The student registration fee is $350 with the majority of the costs comprising meals, lodging, and supplies. Because of generous donations in 2017, Anytown-KC was able to grant 78% of the student participants with a scholarship to offset the registration fee. Please consider making a contribution and encouraging your friends, family, and allies to do the same. In a current divisive climate threatening civil rights, Anytown-KC is needed now more than ever!
