Our Mission: A Mother's Rest is a proactive health initiative committed to the self-care of special needs parents nationwide. As a registered 501c3, we coordinate respite retreats exclusively for caregivers raising children/adults with disabilities. At AMR, we believe that well-rested parents are healthier and less-stressed! AMR is "flipping the script" by making respite proactive, hoping to minimize caregiver burnout and improve the health of the entire family unit.
Our Newman's Own Campaign Goal: In addition to our national network of bed and breakfast inn partners, we intend to purchase & run our own respite inn located in central Virginia (Afton, specifically). If we WIN this campaign, that will mean an additional $150,000 towards the purchase of our inn property!
Our respite inn would be open year-round, with a resident innkeeper & chef, and available at low cost (or no cost as needed) exclusively for parents of loved ones with disabilities. With our own inn, we can make it full service for breakfast, lunch, and dinner as the guests desire. We can partner with local restaurants for meals as well. We look forward to employing local Virginians, even those with disabilities, to support the care of our guests and the maintenance of our inn. We can serve families up and down the East Coast with retreats for moms, dads, couples, or Mommy & Me events.
This could also serve as our home base for the Raising Appalachia program, where we can offer Easter and Thanksgiving meals for rural Virginia special needs families.
In-person respite retreats offer a level of therapeutic healing and recuperative rest that can't be achieved in cyber support groups. Our retreats are freestyle. They are not meant to be educational conferences. (Read more about the AMR difference) Guests can bond and make friends as they feel comfortable, or enjoy their time in peaceful solitude. There are no scheduled activities or professional counselors. Parents have an opportunity to step away from the strains of life at home.
Photos shown above are of two different properties we are interested in. One is a new home with 6 beds, 6 1/2 baths, move-in ready with innkeeper's quarters on 15 secluded acres at the top of Ennis Mountain with sweeping mountain views. The other is a historic Virginia farmhouse home, currently with 4 beds and 2 1/2 baths on 20 secluded, wooded, and streamed acres for 1/3 the price of the newer one. The older home can easily be expanded to include 10 bedrooms, 10 full and 2 half baths, enlarged eating and living areas, and an expansive wrap-around porch.
Afton, VA is centrally located for east coast and mid-west guests. It is a perfect year-round retreat destination in the Blue RIdge Mountains, full of historical venues, antiquing, shopping, wineries, craft breweries, orchards, local-fare restaurants, skiing/winter sports, hiking, golf, and general peace. Read, paint, draw, sleep, rock on our porch, take in the views, or listen to the wind blow. Guests can do everything or nothing while they are here.
Our long term goal: To purchase and run these flagship respite inns in various locations throughout the US, exclusively for these parents and caregivers. We can create our own sanctuaries, just for us, and available ANY TIME. Philanthropic investors and family foundations are encouraged to contact AMR outside of this campaign. email@example.com
Securing a property is the next step in creating our entire respite community in rural central Virginia, starting with our most necessary sanctuary inn.
What happens if we don't raise enough? The location of our cornerstone respite inn in Afton, VA will not change, only the specific home/property. We do hope to raise what we need and bring valuable visibility to our program through this Newman's Own campaign. Every cent raised in this campaign will be held in an interest-bearing fund until we have enough to purchase the property we want outright.
