My affiliation with KGOS began in 2016, when I was a patient of Dr. Fader’s. Last year, as a marker of my “one year out” from surgery, I formed a race team named “Just for the Health of It.” This was a celebration of a year of pretty much complete transformation in terms of my health - thanks to all who accompanied and supported me on that journey; it is ongoing!
This year, my focus is different. I consider myself fortunate to have developed a friendship with Susan Burgert, the founder of this race, over the past year. Sadly, Susan’s battle against endometrial cancer ended on December 5, 2017.
In tribute to her memory, my team name this year is “A Reason, a Season, a Lifetime.”
This is derived from a saying about friendship that Susan shared with me many months ago: “Friends for a reason, friends for a season, or friends for a lifetime.” We thought it was an apt description of our friendship, born of our connection through the race and KGOS, nurtured through a few fleeting seasons, and persisting to the end of her far-too-short lifetime. She will be an inspiration for the rest of mine.
All race proceeds help fund innovative gynecologic cancer research and support local cancer survivors through the newly-named Susan L. Burgert, M.D. Gynecologic Oncology Survivorship Program at the Kelly Gynecologic Oncology Service in the Johns Hopkins Department of Gynecology and Obstetrics.
Your support is greatly appreciated! Thank you!
