Hello family and friends! We are raising money for the American Cancer Society (ACS)! We’re doing this by running the Detroit Free Press International Half Marathon on October 15th. This will be Elibe’s fifth half marathon race. He is also getting ready to run his first full marathon in September. The Detroit Free Press International Half Marathon will be Erinma’s first half marathon race. Elibe enjoys how training for this race challenges him to remain disciplined in his training program every day. Erinma, on the other hand, enjoys how the race training gives her an excuse to buy and consume large boxes of croissants from Sam’s Club. Erinma and Elibe both enjoy how this is giving them the opportunity to raise awareness about cancer research, patient services, treatment, and education!
In the Spring of 2011 our amazing mother, Yvonne, was diagnosed with, and subsequently passed away from a type of brain tumor called glioblastoma multiforme (GBM). GBM is the most common, and most malignant type of adult brain cancer. Despite all the advancements in medicine and technology, the survival rates for people with this type of cancer has not significantly improved in the last forty years! Our mother’s battle with cancer forced us to learn about the importance of research, not just for brain cancers such as GBM, but for all types of cancer. Thanks to the work of organizations such as ACS, many types of cancers that were once incurable, are becoming more and more manageable. The hope is that one day all cancers will be manageable and we will have more survivors. However, this can’t happen without adequate funding.
Even during her most challenging days, our mother was always concerned about caring for those around her. Supporting ACS and the patients and families that they serve is our way of continuing her life’s work. Proceeds from the funds that are generated from our Crowdrise page will go directly to ACS. ACS will use the funds donated to provide services for patients (e.g., lodging, transportation, treatment, etc.). Funds will also be used to research newer, more effective treatments and procedures. You can learn more about the work that ACS does with donations HERE.
Whether you are or know a survivor, have a loved one that is a current patient, have lost a loved one to cancer like us, or just want to support the work of ACS, we are asking that you donate whatever you can. Our goal is to raise $3,000.00 by October 14, 2017 (the day before race day).
Love, Elibe and Erinma
