HEAF’s service learning programs have taken students to Sweden, Dominican Republic, Belize, Botswana, California, New Orleans, Northern Ireland, Brazil, Senegal, Mississippi, Florida’s Seminole Nation, and throughout the Midwest. AND THIS YEAR WE WILL BE TRAVELING TO NEPAL!!!! This spring LSI participants will explore the eastern philosophies, customs and rich culture of Nepal. Students will research the popular cities of Kathmandu and Bhaktapur and the small market economy supporting these cities, develop a deeper understanding of Hinduism and Buddhism and the role it plays in upholding the kulmari system of child idolization, as well as, the current humanitarian efforts, here and abroad, to end the practices of human trafficking among Nepalese youth. This class will culminate in an eleven day service trip to Nepal to deepen students understanding of the Nepalese culture. HEAF’s Learning for Social Impact® is a service learning initiative, for high school students, that combine community service with direct reflection, academic learning, youth exchange, and travel. LSI® project goals are to promote cultural, academic/cognitive, and social competencies of its participants, as well as to complete a sustainable service project that addresses a community need.
