The ALIVE St. Louis office, serving thousands of domestic violence survivors and their children each year, sustained devastating flood damage on July 22. The office is closed while water removal, repairs, and disposal of countless damaged items are addressed.
WE DON’T KNOW when we’ll regain full capacity to support area domestic violence survivors and their children. Right now, ALIVE’s ability to provide services is extremely limited. Because the agency is committed to ensuring clients, staff members, and volunteers have a healthy, functional, pleasant environment, the office may be off limits for awhile. In the meantime, our fantastic team members are taking crisis calls from home and providing what support they can.
WE DO KNOW that the team is working diligently to restore an operational workspace and that we’ll do what is needed to get back to regular business as soon as possible. In the meantime, our amazing team will continue to support clients remotely as best they can.
WE DON’T KNOW the total amount of costs ALIVE will incur due to the flood. We are currently working with parties assessing the damage and potentially providing financial support partially covering the cost of cleanup, construction, and irreparably damaged equipment and supplies. On the heels of a year in which ALIVE provided more emergency shelter bed nights than any year in our 36-year history, direct client service costs led to significant financial strain. With flood-related costs already in the tens of thousands of dollars, we’re concerned.
WE DO KNOW we’re hopeful that the majority of restoration expenses will be covered. Even with the best possible outcome, many expenses won’t be. And we want to ensure we can provide clients with a pleasant, efficient, familiar environment ASAP.
HOW CAN YOU INVOLVED? Your gift, big or small, can help ensure we can recreate ALIVE’s safe, comforting space with a cozy sofa in our group therapy room or cuddly stuffed animal for our littlest clients.
We want to get back to restoring safety and peace one family at a time, for survivors just like Grace. Please take the time to watch her share her story, just scroll through the photos to find her video.
Grace benefited from ALIVE's adult counseling program, alongside other free services offered including ALIVE's 24-hour crisis line and emergency transportation, for 7 years. In her own words Grace says, "[ALIVE] really is a full service to people who have experienced intimate partner violence...I wouldn't be alive without ALIVE."
