The circumstances surrounding my son’s suicide, Conrad Roy III, have garnered international attention. It is unimaginable to me that he was coerced into believing suicide was his only option. I can’t believe that it happened and I cannot describe the pain I feel every moment of every day. I miss my son so very much. Less than year ago, I barely was able to run a half of a mile. I was inspired to get healthy and found running and fitness as a way to cope with the grief. Who would have thought that in March of 2017, I was able to run a half marathon in less than 2 hours. That achievement inspired me to set a goal of running a marathon in my son’s honor. Suicide is preventable. I believe so strongly in the mission of AFSP and have set my fundraising goal of $25,000. I hope that Conrad’s death has an infinite impact. My son was wearing a Boston Strong t-shirt when he died. I truly feel that I was meant to run this marathon in his memory. I am thankful and humbled to have been chosen to run in the 2018 Boston Marathon for AFSP.
