I became aware of ALS when two things happened: the Ice Bucket challenge flooded social media, and when I heard of my dads diagnosis shortly there after. ALS is a progressive neurodegenerative disease which essentially kills the motor neurons for voluntary movement and muscle control, causing cramping and muscle spasms. Due to the loss of brain-muscle connection, the muscle cells begin to atrophy. My dad is mainly affected throughout his upper body as well as his speech. This doesn't stop him from mountain biking and skiing as much as possible, and of course showing me all of the sweet spots. When given the opportunity to continue to raise awareness and money for a potential cure, I had to take it. If it is within your means, please donate to a great cause and bring us closer to understanding this debilitating disease.
