On February 9th, 2019 I will be running the New Orleans Rock and Roll Half-Marathon to benefit The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust. After being fully educated on the trust's efforts to fight poaching in East Africa, I had the privilege of visiting a number of their facilities, and interact with elephants rescued by their team. According to the Great Elephant Census, just 352,271 savannah elephants are left in the surveyed African countries, directly reflecting the need for our conservation efforts. The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust's mission statement is as follows: "The David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust embraces all measures that compliment the conservation, preservation and protection of wildlife. These include anti-poaching, safe guarding the natural environment, enhancing community awareness, addressing animal welfare issues, providing veterinary assistance to animals in need, rescuing and hand rearing elephant and rhino orphans, along with other species that can ultimately enjoy a quality of life in wild terms when grown." The trust has had great success in their conservation efforts so far, and with additional funding, they will be able to continue the incredibly important work that they do.
