Arts Every Day’s 2018 10×10 Exhibit invites teachers and students to create work inspired by artists Jacob Lawrence and Joan Gaither. Jacob Lawrence, a painter and printmaker, and Joan Gaither, a story quilt artist, will both have retrospective exhibitions at the Reginald F. Lewis Museum. Students and teachers are encouraged to view their works and create 10in x 10in portraits or a short performance that celebrate themes of family gathering, every day urban life, and storytelling.
Our kickoff exhibition was inspired by the work of local artist Stephen Towns, whose illustrative multi-layered paintings and quilts from “Take Me Away to the Stars” explores how violence is processed through escapism, religion and myth. After students studied and view Mr. Towns work, we had over 100 pieces were submitted and exhibited in the show. This year, Lawrence and Gaither are our featured artists because of their unique perspectives in visualizing history and community traditions.
The 2018 10×10 Exhibit will be curated by Gary Mullen, and will be on display at the Motor House from January 8, 2018 through February 28, 2018. A public reception will be held on January 24th, 2018 from 4-7pm.
