Kilometer Kids is Atlanta Track Club's free youth running program, which helps inspire kids to achieve health and fitness through a fun and supportive running curriculum and race series.
The Kilometer Kids mission is to promote an active and healthy lifestyle to area youth by empowering children with the knowledge they need to make smart lifestyle choices. Atlanta Track Club is dedicated to inspiring and engaging Atlanta area youth to become active through the sport of running. Together with the community, we are committed to fighting the childhood obesity epidemic.
History of the Program
The Kilometer Kids program launched in 2007 with one location serving 38 kids. Today, Kilometer Kids impacts more than 8,000 kids annually in communities throughout the Atlanta region and beyond. One arm of the program provides a game-based running curriculum for schools to teach a love of running and fitness to their students. And as of 2016, the other arm of the program organizes a 22-race youth running series, including 18 races offered free of charge.
What's the Benefit?
Kilometer Kids seeks to create lifelong healthy habits in children, instilling in participants the importance of an active lifestyle. Through the program, kids learn that exercise is a fun and rewarding activity, opening the door for physical activity to become a lifelong habit. According to the Centers for Disease Control, a lack of early-stage physical activity has led to a 17% obesity rate for children in the United States. By encouraging an active lifestyle in the Atlanta region and beyond, Kilometer Kids and Atlanta Track Club is seeking to turn these statistics around while imparting confidence, self-worth and drive into all Kilometer Kids participants.
