I have decided to run the 5K of the Austin Marathon in support of the Austin Ed Fund's Student Opportunity Fund. I hope you will help support the Student Opportunity Fund, which provides field trips, academic materials and more for economically disadvantaged students across Austin ISD.
Research shows that high-income families spend significantly more resources on educational opportunities than low-income families, in turn correlating with higher academic achievement and graduation outcomes. Opportunities that enhance learning (i.e. field trips, tutoring) are consequently critical for Austin schools to provide the 44,000 low-income students to ensure they excel alongside their higher-income peers.
Minimal public funding exists to support these opportunities at a campus level. PTA funds typically can only ease the burden at high-income campuses. This gap is an ideal window of opportunity for private investment to meet campus-based needs, lifting students out of poverty and connecting them with tools that will help them build better lives.
Inspire the future - change a child's life!
The Student Opportunity Fund:
Austin Ed Fund's Student Opportunity Fund provides educational experiences and opportunities for low-income Austin ISD students. Without this program, many of our talented students would not get to have basic educational experiences that help them reach their highest potential.
Last year alone, the the Student Opportunity Fund supported over $50,000 in projects and impacted over 3,000 students! Projects included:
- Refugee Student and Family Support: Funding for native-language academic tutoring and bilingual dictionaries for refugee students across the district to support their academic, social, cultural, and language transition to Austin ISD
- Keep Austin Teaching Conference Support: Funding registration and travel expenses for Akins High School Ready Set Teach students who have qualified for the regional Texas Association of Future Educators competition in Arlington
- Student-Led Original Musical: Piloting an immersive cross-curricular arts process for Widen Elementary 4th and 5th graders, resulting in an original student-created musical
