Want to get active for affordability?
Austin Habitat is excited to be an official charity partner of the Austin Marathon. As Austin grows, it becomes increasingly more difficult for hardworking families to acheive the American dream of homeownership.
By running for Austin Habitat, you build a home for the Soto Family.
Meet Laura Soto; a born-and-raised Austinite.
Even though the city has changed a great deal over the years, Laura still loves living in Austin. She says, “It’s really all I know, I can’t picture living anywhere else.” She loves what the city has to offer such as festivals, live music, outdoor activities, and events for families and children. This is the city where Laura raised her three kids – Jonathan (19), Nathan (17), and Sierra (16). In a northwest Austin apartment, Laura lives with her teens Nathan and Sierra. The Soto family has been in this apartment for nearly four years, and Jonathan recently moved out. While Laura tries to keep a positive attitude about the family’s living situation, it’s difficult for Laura to hide her frustrations of living in the apartment complex. She describes a nearby motel that continues to have prostitution problems and drug-related crime. Laura explains she desperately wants to remove her children from living around this negative environment and give them a safer place to live.
Now with the stability that owning a home brings, Laura can fulfill this dream. For the past two years, the Soto family participated in the Austin Habitat program and consistently worked towards thei r sweat equity hours. Laura describes the program as “family-oriented” – the staff is involved, helpful, and genuinely cares about her success. On the job sites, she appreciates that everyone helps each other out and works as a team. The Soto family can’t wait to move into their home. Laura says she will have peace of mind knowing its their own. She’s excited for the little things like having family visit, barbequing on the weekend, and doing yardwork, and the big things like providing a stable home environment, attending a nursing program, and seeing her kids go to college.
