The 8th annual Baltimore Young Writers' Summer Studio will offer thirty-two 6th-12th grade students from Baltimore City Public Schools an immersive, transformative six-day retreat at Mar-Lu-Ridge Retreat Center in Jefferson, Maryland.
The Studio is FREE for the young writers who attend, which means we need to raise $1,200 per writer to make the Studio possible.
Support our young writers and they'll share their work in the format of prompts, reading lists, notebooks featuring their poetry, and tote bags!
“The Writers’ Studio made my love for writing grow stronger and confirmed that I should keep doing it.” —Dayja
YOU can help shape a young writer’s future. Our 8th annual Baltimore Young Writers' Summer Studio will offer 32 students from low-income Baltimore City Public Schools an immersive, transformative six-day retreat at Mar-Lu-Ridge Retreat Center in Jefferson, Maryland. The Summer Writers’ Studio is an extension of Writers in Baltimore School’s (WBS) ongoing in-school and after-school programs.
The 2019 program will be held from August 4 - 9, and with your help, 32 students in grades 6 - 12 will be able to attend. For many students, the Writers’ Studio will be their first experience outside of Baltimore City, and often their first experience away from home. Help us raise $15,000 by August 1 to subsidize the cost of the camp experience for these promising young writers. The Studio is completely free to all campers.
WHO WE ARE
“WBS is more than a program or a camp. It is like home. I found myself in my writing. WBS is like a family, a forever family.” — Bryonna
Founded in 2008, WBS empowers the voices of Baltimore City students through in-school, after-school, and summer programming that builds skills in literacy and communication while creating a community of support for young writers. We have served 800+ Baltimore City students through 55 in-school courses, 49 after-school writing clubs and 10 multi-day summer programs. We give underserved students a smaller, more participatory setting to hone reading and writing skills. Our Summer Studio provides a rare opportunity for low-income Baltimore City youth to stay in a rural setting at a mountain retreat. WBS students’ writing has appeared in the Poetry Foundation blog, The Washington Post, The Baltimore Sun, The Baltimore City Paper, and Baltimore Beat. For the past five summers, WBS students have received full scholarships to attend the Iowa Young Writers’ Studio and the Kenyon Review Young Writers Workshop. In 2018, two WBS alumni served as delegates to the inaugural International Congress of Youth Voices.
WHAT WE NEED
The total needed to run the Studio is $36,000, and $15,000 is our crowdfunding goal. The remainder will come from foundations. We're grateful for the John J. Leidy Foundation for already committing $7,500.
“This camp opened new doors for me. Doors that I didn't even know could be opened.” — Marie
“The Studio made me feel more excited when I write. I don’t feel the same at home.” —Joanna
Your gift enables young writers to experience six days of Studio workshops such as story structure, poetry, journalism, origin stories, grammar for writers, character development, point of view, and revision. Outside of classroom time, students enjoy hikes, ghost story nights, swimming, s’mores around a campfire, and a talent show. The Studio will culminate in publication of an anthology of student work and an open mic back in Baltimore (please join us on Friday, August 9 at 7 PM at Red Emma’s Bookstore Coffeehouse to hear the students perform!).
