Take Part In One of the Most Comprehensive Anti-Poverty Programs You'll Ever See
Underserved families face a complex web of hurdles every day such as hunger, illiteracy, family brokenness, and self-destructive behaviors. Intuitively, many organizations laser-focus one of these areas and achieves results. But it's only in one area. The cycle of poverty is often a confluence of multiple negative sources, often converging simultaneously or serially. It's relentless. A singularly-focused approach to poverty reversal may achieve success temporarily but rarely lifts the family out for good.
Behind Every Door’s success comes from a unique model that comprehensively attacks poverty. First, Behind Every Door takes over the on-site rec center at a low-income apartment community and renovates it to become a safe-haven for the community residents. They knock on doors and build relationships with kids and adults living there to learn the needs of that specific community. Then, they operate programming for kids and their families and collaborate with successful nonprofits in the area to bring resources to the adults. The program they operate focuses on four areas: literacy, social-emotional health, discipleship, and exposure. Their collaborative partners specialize in literacy, discipleship, mentoring, employment, or health and wellness. They become a “hub” for the community through a combination of their on-site resource centers and their exceptional staff who build relationships and operate programming. Together with their partners, they are able to serve community members in a way that creates lasting transformation in the lives of both kids and adults in poverty.
Behind Every Door served 2,887 people in 2017 across three apartment communities. Over 285 kids enrolled in programming last year and 6,039 hours of paid work were provided to residents.
