A study of the history of the coal mining communities of Bon Air Mountain from 1882 to 1936 was begun in 1994 by the administration and teachers of the Bondecroft Elementary School of Sparta / White County, Tennessee. The goal was to build pride among residents of the rural Appalachian community and enhance the educational experience for the students of the local elementary school. The work begun at the school has since been continued by teachers and volunteer members of the Bon Air Mountain Historical Society that later founded and operate the historical DeRossett Railroad Section House Museum. The mission of the historical society is to preserve the history of mining on the mountain, provide for the museum operations, coordinate county wide educational opportunities for public school students to create enthusiasm and interest in the study of history, and conduct an annual Bon Air Mountain History Fair.
The money raised during this initial CrowdRise event will be used to help defray the operating and maintenance costs of the DeRossett Railroad Section House Museum and to support the ongoing mission of the Bon Air Mountain Historical Society to preserve the history of the coal mining communities of Bon Air Mountain.
