Breaking Free is a Minnesota-based non-profit and social justice/social change organization founded in 1996 by Vednita Carter. Every year, Breaking Free helps women escape systems of prostitution and sexual exploitation through advocacy, direct services, housing, and education.
Because of the Super Bowl being in Minneapolis this year, we were able to allow clients to sleep overnight, shower, eat, relax, hear about our program and provide intakes when requested for the 12 days leading up to the game. Some organizations donated pajama’s, jogging outfits, underwear, bra’s, hygiene material, hats, mittens, socks and the bedding for the drop-in center. Since February 5, 2018, we’ve had somebody in the drop-in center weekly.
Hundreds of women are on housing waiting lists through Coordinated Entry (HUD) and other programs. The length of time to secure housing can be up to a year. When women want to leave the life of sexual exploitation/human trafficking and are able, a huge barrier exists if they can’t get somewhere safe. Our DV Shelters in Minnesota are always at capacity. Give them a call – check it out for yourselves. This is a horrible situation. We at Breaking Free do not want to turn people away to be re-victimized because of lack of housing. We have three 18 unit apartment buildings that are also at capacity. What are we supposed to do with our homeless, exploited women? You can help!
To sustain the 40 hours per week of drop-in center opportunity, we need to provide those same services and we need YOUR help to do this. Remember, we are the only agency in Minnesota that has a drop-in center for sex trafficked adult women.
