Oh boy, here I go, hiking again...
I'm off this time to hike the Grand Enchantment Trail. More of a route than a trail, it winds approximately 770 miles from Phoenix to Albuquerque, using existing trails, dirt and paved roads, and overland routes on public land. It's going to be much more of a navigational challenge than either the Colorado Trail or the Pacific Crest Trail, but my hiking partner, Raging Pineapple and I, feel up to the challenge. It's also yet another privilege I've been granted, and I always try to find a way to use this platform to pay it forward, and do some good with my time outside.
While historically, I have fundraised for Big City Mountaineers - a very worthy charity that helps urban youth close to home get into the outdoors - with all that's going on politically, it feels as though these young folk may not have anywhere *to* go outside, if things continue as they are. That's why, this year, I've decided to raise funds for Earthjustice, an organization that focuses on litigation with an eye to preserving both the existence and the quality of our outdoor spaces. Earthjustice comes highly recommended not only in the research I've done on the subject, but also through lawyer-friends who practice environmental law.
I'm aiming for $770 - a dollar for each mile hiked. Those of you who donate will be mentioned in a "Thank You" post after the hike; a donation of $25 or more will earn you a hand-written postcard. Due to time restraints and what I imagine will be a limited availability of postcards along this more-remote route, postcards will be sent after the hike and postmarked no later than June 20th.
So help me help Earthjustice. Because the Earth *does* need a good lawyer.
