Story
  May 10 2019 . 39 Eldridge St, New York, NY 10002, USA

CAAAV Organizing Asian Communities works to build grassroots community power across diverse poor and working class Asian immigrant and refugee communities in New York City.

In the past, we've:

  • campaigned against Amazon's HQ2 and successfully kicked them out of Queens/NYC!
  • incubated projects that would later become their own organizations, including the NYC Taxi Workers Alliance, Domestic Workers United, and Mekong NYC
  • pressured the city to allocate $14 million to build parks and open green space accessible to Chinatown and Lower East Side residents along the East River Waterfront, rather than the original plan of high-end stores and private developments
  • organized the Southeast Asian community in the Bronx to challenge the failed Welfare to Workfare programs, documented in the film, Eating Welfare
  • advocated for the rights of street vendors in Chinatown that were targeted during former NYC Mayor Giuliani’s Quality of Life campaign
  • worked in a city-wide coalition that pushed Mayor Bloomberg to sign an Executive Order providing language access for immigrant New Yorkers
  • organized countless tenants to fight their landlords and stay in their homes
  • developed the leadership of young people around a vision for social justice through organizing

Our annual Karaoke Battle is a fundraiser party to support CAAAV, a grassroots organization that relies on your community support. CAAAV supporters create teams on Crowdrise that fundraise leading up to Karaoke Battle night when they dress up in their best themed costumes and compete in a karaoke sing-off against other teams for the chance to win prizes and bragging rights. CAAAV’s goal this year is to raise $25,000. You do not have to compete or sing on the night of the event even if you create a fundraising page and help us fundraise!

Last year, with the help of community support, we raised over $20,000! Our theme this year is inspired by our major win this year - the fight against Amazon coming to Queens! We beat Amazon, a huge corporation and the richest man in the world, which means we can liberate our wildest (revolutionary and movement) dreams!
