Camp Shout Out, located at Pioneer Trails Camp on Big Blue Lake in Holton, Michigan is a traditional overnight summer camp with a special therapeutic focus on improving communication competence for youth who stutter, ages 8-18, combined with a hands-on professional training opportunity for speech-language pathologists and graduate students. Campers participate in small and large group therapeutic activities designed to assist them in achieving personal communication goals. A Leadership-in-Training program is offered for high school campers who wish to increase their leadership skills.
The Training and Therapeutic Program at Camp Shout Out is directed by the esteemed Kristin Chmela M.A. CCC-SLP BCS-F and includes additional fluency specialists who serve as faculty. For more information please visit our website, www.campshoutout.org.
Stuttering is a communication disorder occurring in up to 5% of all school age youth often resulting in emotional & social consequences, including communication withdrawal, bullying, & shame. A survey revealed that 80% of youth who stutter reported being bullied & 40% of adults had been denied a job or promotion. Youth who stutter, provided with positive communication experiences such will improve communicative confidence, competence and effectiveness
This project provides services directly and indirectly to approximately 200 young people who stutter each year. Camp Shout Out provides state-of-the-art training for speech-language pathologists and graduate students as they seek to deepen their knowledge and and understanding when working with young people who stutter.
