The Joyful Heart Foundation is working to end the backlog of hundreds of thousands of untested rape kits across the United States.
At its heart, the backlog is about justice for survivors. When a person is sexually assaulted, and chooses to undergo the invasive four-to-six hour evidence collection exam, they expect the kit will be tested and the evidence used to prosecute the perpetrator. All too often, this is not the case.
Joyful Heart has identified more than 225,000 untested rape kits sitting in police, crime lab or other storage facilities across the country. And, with nearly 20 states that haven’t counted the kits in their possession, there are likely several hundred thousand more yet to be discovered.
This is shocking and we should all be outraged. Hundreds of thousands of rape kits languishing on shelves, while survivors wait for justice and rapists roam free.
Survivors deserve better. We all deserve better. We must act now.
Joyful Heart is working towards one clear ambitious goal: to pass laws in all 50 states requiring kits to be counted, tested, and acted upon. And, on April 16, we will host the first-ever #ENDTHEBACKLOG Day of Action to raise awareness and galvanize support for this movement.
We can eliminate the rape kit backlog with your help. Your contribution helps us pass the laws necessary to get every kit—in every state— tested and make sure the backlog doesn’t ever happen again.
Join our Day of Action. Every dollar counts. Together we can end the backlog. Survivors of sexual assault deserve nothing less.
