Be part of this CHAIN REACTION.
Friends: On September 29, 2018, I'll be participating for the third year in a row in One Common Unity's Peace Ride. It is now a highlight of my autumn, and I hope you'll join me for the ride. This crowdrise page is an invitation to join, either through participating in the ride (and fundraising for the team!) and/or financially supporting our team, "Chain Reaction."
One Common Unity is a 16-year old non-profit in Washington, D.C. breaking chains of violence through the power of music, arts, and peaceful pedagogies. OCU works through schools and retreats with youth in the DC area, creating positive places for young people to connect to their innate creativity and compassion. And guess what: they do this through methods like music, art, spoken word, meditation, yoga, being outdoors - magical work.
WHY I RIDE: I ride for peace because I've witnessed first-hand and by extension the trauma that surrounds gun violence and other forms of violence through my 10+ years of work for peace with young people. AND, I have read the research and I know that healing work like OCU's CAN prevent violence and sustain change. I witnessed the healing power of the "Fly By Light" retreat when the organization I work for sent college-aged mentors and their high school mentees to Fly By Light to process and heal together after we lost an 18-year-old college-bound high school participant to gun violence in June of 2016. In 2017, the students who participated created their own documentary about the experience of violence and opportunities for peace in their community. They are building resilience and change through relationships with each other in one specific DC neighborhood. And it's contagious.
These seeds of transformation were planted by these students and grew with the work of One Common Unity.
YOU TOO can plant and grow powerful seeds through participating in or sponsoring the 2018 Peace Ride. This Peace Ride is a fantastic way to celebrate the best parts of One Community Unity's joyful work to shape a more creative, fun, collaborative, and peaceful world. If you've never been, it's such a fun day to hang out, whether you're cycling, soaking up the sun, listening to music, or just chilling. I'm such a fan of OCU that I won the award last year for most Peace Ride sponshorships organized by a non-board member. I won't be able to win that award this year since I was so awed and invigorated by this community that I officially joined OCU's board this past spring! :)
It hasn't stopped my goals from growing: I plan to top 2017's goal of $540 by raising $640 as an individual and recruiting others to collectively meet a $1000.00 team goal for the 2018 Peace Ride. Will you be a part of this chain reaction?
Thank you for joining us.
