Please help me build a legacy of Hope in celebration of my Dad...
There are moments in our lives that forever change who we are and change how we live every day after. In August of 1987, that moment was finding my Dad's body, losing him after a long battle with chronic depression.
None of us ever anticipates being in these moments of deep despair and, at age 17, while I knew my father battled his depression every day, I never expected to return home from an afternoon errand to find that this wonderfully loving and protective father had hanged himself. I was blessed to have access to counseling resources that I know saved my own life and helped me to move through my grief and on to build a joyful and productive life, but other survivors of suicide are far less fortunate.
In the U.S. alone, 4.7 million people are dealing with the aftermath of suicide, and many of those left behind struggle with incomprehensible and stigmatized loss, debilitating emotions, and complex personal challenges. Most who’ve experienced suicide loss say they never knew such pain existed—yet our society is largely unaware of the degree to which survivors are impacted, and most mental health professionals have received little or no training in aftercare for survivors. In fact, adult survivors are nearly 10 times more likely to consider suicide themselves.
I received the gift of skilled support and I’m asking you to join me to make sure that others like me have access to life-saving resources as well. The Alliance of Hope for Suicide Survivors (AOH) is a 501(c)3 nonprofit founded in 2008 that provides online, web-based, low-cost phone-based consultation, group support, and access to resources 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, all year round. These services are provided by trained trauma and loss counselors.
I'm asking for you to join me to ensure that this skilled support and life-saving resources is available by contributing to the Alliance of Hope.
As I celebrate the memory of my Dad this holiday season, I’m asking for your help in supporting the extraordinary work of teh Alliance of Hope. Please help me build a legacy of hope for my Dad and continue healing for me and so may others.
I also invite you to share story with me as well if you have been touched by suicide and would like to learn more about the Alliance of Hope and the community of survivors.
With my deepest gratitude.
Be a Champion for Hope, and help us continue to provide hope and healing after suicide.
