Charlie Knight & Bren Ledger will be running the Toronto Marathon on October 21st and will be looking to raise money for the fantastic ORG, HeadsUpGuys.
HeadsUpGuys is a resource for supporting men in their fight against depression by providing tips, tools, information about professional services, and stories of success. They are funded through individual donations and is based at The University of British Columbia (UBC).
One in eight men (12.5%) are diagnosed with a common mental illness, such as anxiety, depression, panic disorder or obsessive compulsive disorder.
For men under 35, suicide is the biggest cause of death and 4 in 5 suicides (78%) are by men.
Mental health charities have looked to change the stigma surrounding mental health and particularly the stigma of asking for support. The truth is, all of us need the support of others at some point in our lives - regardless of gender.
Perhaps the most interesting (and worrying) finding is that while on average more women are diagnosed with common mental health problems than men, the rate of male suicide is significantly higher.
This suggests that men are suffering with mental distress, but may not be receiving (or indeed asking for) the help they need.
We want to continue to raise awareness and to let men know that it's OK to ask for help and speak to someone. If we can raise enough money to support and positively impact one life, we would have made a difference.
Any donations are truly appreciated. This is a cause we both believe in deeply and will continue to try and raise as much awareness as we possibly can.
