THE CLIMB FOR A CURE Group cycling climb challenge up Mont Ventoux in Brantes, France on May 3, 2016 to raise money for immunotherapy cancer research at the Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center of Columbia University. All donations are tax deductible.
THE GROUP OF CYCLISTS We are a group of 16 friends who have banded together around this tremendous challenge and great cause as we all have been painfully touched by cancer. Some have personally battled breast cancer or melanoma. Some have lost loved ones to lung cancer, pancreatic cancer, breast cancer, etc. The losses and pain, many recent, keep piling up. It was time do something to help those that are so passionate about finding a cure. AS A GROUP WE ARE PAYING ALL OF OUR OWN EXPENSES AND WE HAVE ALSO PLEDGED $114,500 TO SUPPORT THIS EVENT!
THE CHALLENGE Mont Ventoux, known both as “the bald mountain” and “the beast of Provence”, is one of the most famous, and difficult, climbs of the Tour de France. In fact, the 12th stage of this year’s Tour, held on Bastille Day, will feature a climb to the top of Ventoux. Our ride will be 16 miles from the Ventoux base to its summit at 6,273 feet with a total climb of 4,000 feet. No one in our group has ever done anything like this. Mostly we are recreational, weekend riders. While making the summit is the ultimate goal for all, the fundraising will be based on the effort of the climb.
THE CHARITY After weeks of research and talking to people who live in the world of oncology, we selected The Herbert Irving Comprehensive Cancer Center (HICCC) of Columbia University. While there are many incredible organizations focused on cancer prevention and care, this is clearly one of the leading organizations in the world. We have had the privilege of spending time with several of the doctors at HICCC, including Dr. Stephen Emerson who is the Director of HICCC and Director of Oncology Services, New York/Presbyterian Hospital. WOW…these docs are impressive, confident and passionate about what they are doing to find a cure. They are on the cutting edge of research in immunotherapy and immunogenetics, two disciplines which show great promise in finding a cure for cancer. Their work to date has resulted in major successes and breakthroughs in these areas.
