Cracker Box Palace is a not for profit, no kill farm animal shelter located in Alton, NY on a historic Shaker Farm. The shelter not only cares for up to 300 farm type animals, but are also restoring the old farm buildings and continue to protect the 300 acres of forests and wild life and still farm over 100 acres. The shelter houses horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, alpaca, rabbits and assorted farm poultry that come from neglect, abuse, cruelty or just because their owners couldn't keep them anymore for a varitey of reasons. The animals are vet checked, put on healthy diets and given time to trust people again. Once they're approved, many are adopted at their forever family. Some will never leave the farm and they will live their lives out here at the farm. The work is done with the help of over 100 volunteers. 4 staff people and a program at the farm called STEADY Work. It gives people 18 to 24 years of age a chance to get experience and learn the soft skills to get their first jobs or careers. The farm remains open to visitors and tours on a regular basis and there are events during the year to help support the costs of the farm, feed and care. There 10 miles of trails to hike or horse back ride and even a fairy trail for the little (or big) kids to explore.
CBP has big plans for the future including a indoor riding arena and riding program, a vet co-op clinic for horses and farm animals, adding more trails and campsites, finishing the restoration of the old Shaker Houses and finishing repairing the barns and extending the STEADY Work Program. But the rising costs of the operating budget are becoming tougher to raise. It is with the help of our supporters and volunteers that will help CBP keep improving the farm and keeping it open to the public for future generations to come!
