Can't make it to Croctoberfest this year? You can still help by making a donation today!
This year we celebrate our 5th Annual Croctoberfest - a joint effort between the San Diego Zoo Reptile Department and American Association of Zoo Keepers San Diego Chapter (AAZK San Diego) to help raise awareness and collect funds for crocodilian species throughout the world. This year we are focusing our efforts on the West African Dwarf Crocodile.
Most recently listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Redlist, the dwarf croc is a prime example of the need for current population surveys to better grasp its situation in natural habitats. Limited to Central and West Africa, little is understood about current population trends, with surveys not always a viable option due to the instability of some home range countries. Surveys for other crocodile species in Gabon in 2010 found a strange population of dwarf crocs that were feasting on bats in caves, demonstrating how essential population surveys are to understanding a species. The money raised from this year’s Croctoberfest, will help us send a group of scientists and locals out to West Africa to search for this smaller crocodilian species. The goal is for scientists to document more information on habitat requirements, population trends and to gain an understanding of the human/croc relationship in their natural ranges.
Every little bit counts!
