I am thrilled to be selected for the 2018 Charity Warriors Challenge, a fundraising competition and accelerator for women who are passionate ambassadors of nonprofits! My nonprofit, Cures Within Reach for Cancer, raises awareness and funds for the many promising cancer treatments being ignored simply because they may not be profitable enough to justify their development costs.
I am both a cancer researcher and patient advocate. I lost my mom to multiple myeloma last year. It is heartbreaking to learn about treatments that potentially could have helped her. Unfortunately, she and millions of other cancer patients did not have access to them because the funding and incentives for the necessary clinical trials are not available. We started Cures Within Reach for Cancer to ensure that all promising treatment options have been clinically tested and made available to cancer patients around the world.
Cures Within Reach for Cancer repurposes off-patent drugs to more effectively and affordably treat cancer. For example, there is evidence that a safe and inexpensive anti-inflammatory drug, commonly used to treat pain, could help breast cancer patients live longer. This simple treatment could save 10,000 lives each year in the U.S. alone and $1 billion in U.S. healthcare costs annually.
Our immediate goal is to collect and organize the clinical evidence supporting the cancer use of hundreds of promising and inexpensive therapies previously FDA approved for non-cancer indications; and to make this information available to doctors and the public. We will then select the medicines with the best chance of extending and improving the lives of cancer patients and fund the clinical trials necessary to incorporate them into common medical practice. The success of our initiatives will be a model for the treatment of other diseases.
Please donate whatever you can to this life-saving cause. The nonprofit that raises the most in this crowdfunding campaign by April 6 will win an additional $10,000 and become a Charity Warriors finalist! Thank you so much for your support!
