At the Y, not only do we provide healthy living classes and programs, but we also have programs that can help prevent or reverse disease and aging - like our Diabetes Prevention program and our Enhance Fitness class.
29.1 million people in the US have diabetes. 86 million people - more than 1 out of 3 adults - have prediabetes. Without weight loss and moderate physical activity, 15-30% of people with prediabetes will develop type 2 diabetes within 5 years.
With our Diabetes Prevention program in 2016, we helped 10 participants increase their physical activity levels to a collective 150 minutes a week, reduce lab values like cholesterol, hemoglobin A1C and blood pressure, and lose a cumulative 115 lbs!
One participant said, "I've learned how to log my diet and fat grams, which helps me stay on track, my blood sugar level is now in the normal range, and I have learned food strategies that I will use for the rest of my life [...] I feel surrounded and supported by people with similar food challenges."
We believe every person deserves a chance to have this kind of support and results.
Similarly, Enhance Fitness is a critically impactful class for our older members. It is an evidence-based group exercise program that uses simple, easy-to-learn movements that motivate individuals - particularly those with arthritis - to stay active throughout their lives.
We test participants when they first enter the class and again in 3 months. In that time period, 85% of our participants increased strength, 79% increased endurance and 55% increased speed.
By raising funds to support those who can't afford these programs and other programs that help prevent disease, we are able to become affordable and accessible for all, regardless of financial ability.
