A few years ago, I was tabling at the Los Angeles City College "Job Fair". Many students were attracted to the large red and white "Sexual Harassment" buttons piled high near the usual flyers, brochures, and petitions.
Now, I like to believe I have an open mind, but when a young fellow asked for one, I hesitated. "If you can tell me who Anita Hill is, and you promise to wear the pin, I'll be happy to give you one," I said.
He didn't have an answer. But he was listening. "If you'll let me tell you, I'll give you the pin," I offered. Soon he went off with a handful to give his friends.
Sometimes a person feeling her years in the struggle can feel "out of date". And then again, when tabling for women's rights, a chance like this comes along to remind us why we are still in the game.
Those buttons from the 1980's are once again in high demand. Help us reprint them, and our still relevant 9to5 Guide to Combating Sexual Harassment.
Please give generously to our year-end campaign, and stay in the game with 9to5. Thanks so much!
