"You can never get enough books into the hands of enough children." Dolly Parton She's right.
In a rural area such as Brown County, many families can't afford books for their children. Some parents don't believe in education. Most want their children to succeed but they can't afford the transportation to get to the library.
Research shows that if a student is not reading at 3rd grade level when they enter 4th grade, the literacy deficits compound exponentially over time. This can mean failure over the next several years of education, which in turn results in unemployment, jail, and other lifelong struggles.
In Brown County, we are determined to help our kids succeed. Dolly Parton's Imagination Library provides approximately 6700 high-quality books each year to our kids ages birth-to-five. That's 550 kids per month in our county that receive these books.
The cost for Brown County to participate in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library is approximately $13,000 per year. The Brown County Literacy Coalition is in the process of establishing an endowment for this program so that our children will benefit for years to come.
