Our UMass Medical School DR BHI Mission Statement:
"As an academic health sciences center, the UMass Dominican Republic Batey Health Initiative (DR BHI) aims to partner with local organizations and community members to improve the health of La Romana batey residents through community centered care and health initiatives."
The DR BHI is sponsored by UMass Medical School with the participation of volunteer medical and nursing students and UMass faculty based on campus and in our broader community of healthcare preceptors.
The DR BHI collaborates with local partners and organizations based La Romana, DR. including the Good Samaritan Mission Hospital and the Light a Candle Foundation. Through these partnerships, DR BHI serves four ‘adopted’ batey communities in the rural Central Romana region that are home to Haitian and Haitian-Dominican migrant sugar cane workers and their families. The DR BHI teams serve these vulnerable populations on the bateys, where there is limited access to healthcare, public health, education and basic amenities like running water, sanitation and electricity.
Your donation to the DR BHI will help support:
• Local training and day-to-day efforts of our dedicated community health promoters who serve as the essential bridge between the four bateys and the local health care system to ensure access to medical care for all batey residents.
• Healthcare screening and disease prevention programs through non-profit groups working in the bateys year round. Ongoing programs include nutrition, maternal/child health, and hypertension.
• Facilitate care for the most ill and vulnerable batey patients provided by BHI DR teams on-the-ground. Common conditions include acute emergencies, chronic illnesses such ashypertension, infectious diseases, and malnutrition and the special needs of frail elders, pregnant women and infants.
All of our work is done in close collaboration with our local partners with a focus on health care education, sustainable resource development and prevention. Your donation will directly benefit the local batey communities and their residents.
Thank you for your generous support!
