As everyone knows, our rescue was featured on Fox 5 New York News last night. However, what most people don’t know is that prior to the live interview, Erin received an alarming phone call from one of our volunteers. Our volunteers were doing their usual routine of feeding and evaluating all of our animals when they noticed that Friendly appeared to be in distress. After learning about his symptoms, Erin’s initial response was to give medication to treat the symptoms and ease the pain, and then she would call the veterinarian.
After receiving the initial treatment, Friendly seemed to be showing signs of improvement. Upon returning to the farm after our live segment, Erin’s first task was to check on Friendly’s status. Unfortunately, Friendly appeared to be very distressed. Erin administered more medication and immediately called our veterinarian. After, examining Friendly, our veterinarian decided that it would be in our (and Friendly’s) best interest to transport him to Mid-Atlantic Equine Medical Center as soon as possible.
We quickly arranged emergency transportation to take Friendly to Mid-Atlantic, where they examined him and informed us that we had two options: euthanasia or surgery, which is extremely expensive and which doesn’t always guarantee a positive outcome. We all felt Friendly deserved the chance to survive, so we went forward with the surgery, where doctors discovered that Friendly had a lipoma strangling his small intestine.
The surgery was successful, although it took longer than expected because more lipomas were discovered. Friendly is currently still recovering at Mid-Atlantic. He is far from being in the clear, but beating the odds. We believe that the reason Friendly is fighting and getting stronger is due to the love he receives at our rescue, and because his best friend Emsy is waiting for his return home. Friendly and Emsy are a part of our original rescue horses, and will live out the rest of their lives here.
We anticipate Friendly’s treatment will cost well over $15,000, as the surgery alone was $12,000. We would like to think that this is an example of how far we are willing to fight for our beloved rescues.
Please help us to enable Friendly to get the medical attention he needs to return to his forever home at the rescue. Thank you for your constant support and love as we continue on this journey.
