I was in Cuba two weeks ago, and the site of the street animals was heartbreaking. I work with TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release) where I am, and it is impossible not to see the suffering of animals wherever I go. I did some research when I got back home and discovered there are some vets in Cuba offering spay/neuter clinics and refuge but they don't have the supplies they need and even with donations it can be hard to get things in Cuba. They need both direct monetary donations and also they need people to bring donations of medications, shampoos, topical skin and eye treatments, rubber gloves, antibacterial soaps, etc. if they are visiting Cuba. To give you some idea of how far your dollar is going to go, consider that the average Cuban only makes about $25-$35 per month. For around $250-$300, you are supporting the salary of a Cuban vet for almost a year! To further give you an idea of how hard it is to get things in Cuba, consider that a bar of soap sold there is around $6. If you are only earning $25 a month, $6 for a bar of soap is an out of reach luxury item. Imagine if we had to pay $6 for a bar of soap! Things like sewing kits, fishing hooks and 30 pound fishing line, soaps, medications, toothbrushes (adult and child), batteries, vitamins (adult and child), dry cat food... all very much needed. What we spent mindlessly on one cup of fancy coffee might be what someone in Cuba earns in a week! Please consider helping the vet clinics that are striving to provide a better life for the street animals of Cuba. Many suffer from severe skin ailments, malnutrition and abuse. You can look at both the website here: http://cubananimalrescue.org/the-team.html and the website or Facebook page for Aniplant. You can donate directly and if you are going to Cuba, please make room in your suitcase for basic necessities to donate. If you are a pet lover, ask your vet about donating expiring medications and bring those along. You can also help this charity by selecting them through the Amazon Smile feature and each time you spend money on Amazon, Amazon will donate to this charity also. Passive giving! Give up that cup of coffee today and donate that $4-$5 to this cause and know your dollar is going to be appreciated to a degree you can't even imagine! If you've ever loved an animal, donate in the spirit of that animal you've had in your life. Every animal deserves a chance and some animals have a pretty bleak future without some help from us. Thank you for caring and thank you for considering this cause.
