Food security exists when "all people, at all times, have physical and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food to meet their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life." Food insecurity exists in our own community, as a major problem in Detroit and surrounding areas. Ones health is directly related to their ability to find and consume quality food. The daily intake of a variety of fruits and vegetables is actually linked to a decreased risk of chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer. As a vegan and an avid cook, I spend the majority of my days thinking about, making and consuming quality food. I wouldn't be able to do any of this without easy access to affordable food.
I'm supporting Forgotten Harvest because they are working tirelessly to tackle this important issue. Thier mission is to relieve hunger in Metro Detroit and to prevent nutritious food waste. They transport an average of over 3.75 million pounds of rescued food each month. I encourage you to check out their website and, if you are able, donate to this worthy cause.
