To commemorate the fifth anniversary of the Patriots Day bombing of the Boston Marathon, an event which shook my hometown to its core and continues to impact the lives of my friends and colleagues to this day, I performed a special concert on April 15 2018 at Piedmont Piano Company in Oakland, CA.
Boston is my first and forever home, but for the past 13 years I have been lucky to call the SF Bay Area home. This concert celebrated the music of both of my home-towns, with songs for soprano, viola and piano by composers from the Bay State and the Bay Area. "From Bay to Shining Bay!"
The centerpiece was the West Coast Premiere of Hard Stones composed by rising opera talent Griffin Candey on texts by Boston-based poet Lisa DeSiro. The five poems Griffin selected for this song cycle were written by Lisa - one poem per day - during the chilling and tragic events of the 2013 bombing and subsequent manhunt.
The concert also featured a world premiere by Oakland's own Kev Choice, plus music by Bay Area composers David Conte, Jake Heggie, Miriam Miller, Kurt Erickson, John Thow and Michael Kaulkin, and Massachusetts composers Amy Beach, John Harbison, Vartan Aghababian, Heather Gilligan, Howard Frazin and Leonard Bernstein.
All funds raised at the performance and through this portal will be donated to Limbs for Life, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to providing fully-functional prosthetic care for individuals who cannot otherwise afford it and raising awareness of the challenges facing amputees.
