Hi, my name is Julia Lowther and I am 16 years old with a passion to make a difference in the world. After going on a ME to WE trip to the Maasai Mara in Kenya with my family, I knew how I was going to accomplish this. Initially I was excited to go to Kenya to capture the culture and animals thru the lens of my camera as photography is one of my hobbies, but I came home with so much more. While in Kenya we learned the importance of safe drinking water in rural communities. Before WE Villages came to Kenya and provided access to clean drinking water, young girls in rural families were responsible for walking up to 6km multiple times a day to collect (often contaminated) water from the rivers. This meant there was no time for school. The communities that now have access to water have also had schools built so most children now have the opportunity to attend elementary school. High school though, is different. WE Secondary Schools have been built with a live on campus and in order for girls to attend these schools funding is required. While in Kenya we were fortunate to be welcomed into communities and meet both elementary school children and Secondary School Learners. The girls we met from Kisaruni and Oleleshwa Secondary Schools have exciting dreams of becoming doctors, nurses, teachers, journalist and more. These jobs require an education, but going to school beyond Grade 8 is a privlidge and hard for many to do. This story of Peninah Musanka, who graduated in 2016, is very common in the Maasai Mara community https://www.we.org/stories/we-charity-empowers-girls-through-education-in-kenya/. While touring the WE Farm during our trip I was able to talk a lot with one girl in particular. We were both the same age and were comparing lives and opportunities at school, I realized how much we take our education for granted in Canada. It is because of her and her dreams that I want to help another Kenyan girl my age realize her dreams and attend Secondary School. My goal is to raise $12,000 to sponsor one girl to get a full 4 year Secondary School education. Every donation makes a difference. Thank you so much!
