HRI is a non-profit organization that systematically organizes class action lawsuits against predatory landlords who are defrauding tenants in rent regulated buildings. Incorporated less than two years ago, HRI has organized ten major lawsuits, including its most recent class action lawsuit against Kushner Companies.
In the midst of an affordable housing crisis, a rent fraud epidemic threatens to dismantle the largest affordable housing program in New York City. Rent stabilization sets limits on how much landlords can charge tenants in rent. Yet, an audit conducted by the New York State government found that a whopping 40% of landlords are illegally overcharging tenants in rent stabilized buildings. Oftentimes, when an apartment goes vacant and no one is looking, landlords will illegally spike the rent in excess of what they are allowed to charge by law. When a landlord defrauds a family, he is not just stealing their money, but their food, their child’s education, and their quality of life.
Housing Rights Initiative (HRI) is fighting back.
HRI uses a no holds barred and proactive legal approach to combat fraudulent real estate practices and get back what was stolen from the families of New York City. Every aspect of HRI's efforts is quantifiable, tangible, and impactful. Tenants who are being overcharged are entitled to a rent refund, rent reduction, and, most importantly, affordable rent increases. Help keep our mission alive and invest in our impact today.
