In 2013, three young activists who had been working with the South Carolina Progressive Network realized that too few young people were being engaged and involved in the state's movement for social justice. Those three young organizers committed themselves to empowering other young South Carolinians to engage in the civic processes of their local communities and state. To do so, they began to construct an organization with a focus on youth outreach and recruitment. Our New Legacy Project (NLP) is emerging as a much needed youth contingent of our state's progressive community.
The Subversive Art Festival Extravaganza 2.0 will be the second iteration of last year’s festival organized by the New Legacy Project. This year’s theme is “Dream Dangerously”. We are told that emancipatory collective actions are predestined to fail. We should accept the coordinates of our current society with its economic, racial, social and environmental injustices because it is the only workable system. Is this our dream? The time has come to reimagine our future society and demand that which power would have us deem impossible.
SAFE 2.0 will be a space to challenge the limits of what is presented as the only “workable” system(s) of organizing our society. Join local artists and organizers as we re-frame the narrative of what is possible in South Carolina: let’s create our own dreams! This year we are returning to the Tapp’s Art Center on November 4th at 5 PM.
